Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. She comes from the fourth Roberts family to have resided in Atlanta. It began with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts who was an agriculturalist. Early on, her father became interested in theater. In 1952, while studying at Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. He joined the military in 1953 and, while stationed in Biloxi Mississippi was cast in a military production that included Betty Lou Bredemus who was as well in the Air force. In 1955, the couple got married and their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter attended Tulane University New Orleans Louisiana following his departure from the Air Force in the year 1957. Walter was a part of the Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio at the time they moved their family from Atlanta to Decatur in Georgia in 1960. Walter as well as Betty Lou began producing a children's TV show in Decatur, Georgia called Bum Bum and His Buddies. They financed the production themselves. In 1964 Betty Lou and Walter founded the Actors and Writers Workshop. It ran for 6 years. They also had Lelisa Billingsley (also called Lisa) as well as Julia (also called Julie) at the time.
